My songs of the year

This is a random list of songs I listened to the most this year. Many are not actually from this year. They come from random places and people, lists on NPR, mix CDs given to me and mixes posted online by interesting people … I’ve been compiling this list for a while, and it’s so ridiculous ultimately, but I am just quite fond of all of these songs. Some because I like to run to them, some because they take me back to Broadway shows I saw this year, some because I sang along to them with friends very loudly in cars, some because they are pretty. I don’t know. Who knows why we love the songs we do? Lots of them are from SYTYCD thanks to the ability to make playlists in Spotify of the many, many songs I’ve discovered through that show over the years. I might add to this list as more come back to me. I feel like I’ve branched out a bit in terms of what I listen to these days thanks to the online resources available. Thanks, future.

The first song posted here is one I did not discover until the last month of the year, but I’ve listened to it so many times and love it so much that I’m putting it first. I love it from the top of my head to the tips of my toes. I don’t exactly know what it is about this song that made it become A Song That Belongs To Me Forever, but that’s what it is.

In the Game of Songs, you win or you lose your chair.

I’m a huge fan of the books and the series (btw, if you haven’t checked out InnAtTheCrossroads.com, you’re missing a real treat), but every time I hear that opening theme, I just weep. I played viola for years, could have gone professional, and didn’t. It wasn’t “exciting” enough. I. Was. An. Idiot. That bombastic cello (played that too) just HURTS.

So relieved to see Fake Empire on the list.

OF COURSE! I did not put another certain road trip song because I had to draw the line at what songs I could admit loving in public.

I love the curatorial aspect of your blog. Listening to your selections was my soundtrack for the last two days at work, and now I have a happy list of new bands to explore. Thanks!
