Sushi, Snot, & Sloop John B

My sister and I went to see Lost in Translation Saturday night, and we loved it. This might be considered spoilerish, so skip down to the next paragraph if you don't want to read anything about the movie, or highlight the text following the colon if you do: My sister burst into tears at the end, which should come as no surprise. She asked, "Do you think we're not supposed to know what he said?" after Bob whispered in her ear. I nodded and whispered back, "I think he told her again that she's not hopeless." And she burst into tears some more. "She's so good! I love her! I love them!" And then she blubbered, "The part in the hotel lobby? When he totally ignored that hot chick to get to her? That was my favorite part!" Yeah, that was good. "And his hand! And her foot!" Yeah, that too. We were so relieved that they didn't hook up that we were practically skipping through the parking lot on our way to the car, and of course we went out for sushi in honor of Bob's desire to eat more healthily in manner of the Japanese.

I'm suffering the thick-headedness that accompanies a sinus infection and trying to bravely soldier on. I spent the majority of yesterday prostrating myself on the couch, lifting my head feebly to drink orange juice and sip chicken noodle soup, and sucking on lozenges and slurping on popsicles to numb the pain in my throat. I took a Benadryl before bed, praying that it would not kill me even though the expiration date was 12/2001, and I was unconscious before the end of Alias, which is a good thing, because if I had beheld Vaughn's new wife, I might have hurled up all of my phlegm. I had feverish dreams last night involving Scott Speedman rescuing me from a strange tribe of aliens with no mouths who kidnapped me.

J: So what about your crush? Any new developments?

Eliza: Ah, yes. Thumbs down on the crush. Relapsed drug addict, bankruptcy. No thanks! But having a crush for a day or two was so fun that it made me decide that it's time to find another one.

J: Well, some good came out of it then.

Eliza: Exactly.

J: I will keep my eyes open for you.

Eliza: Thanks. My flooring guy, who did my living room last year, met S. and heard all about the wedding plans, was DISTRAUGHT about the breakup and was just literally scratching his head in dismay while laying my bedroom tile and going, "I wish I had someone for you! But none of my friends are smart enough for you! And you have such a good heart!" My flooring guy and I are apparently LIKETHIS.

J: LOL. Well, he is right.

Sometimes J. is nice.

I can't believe JournalCon is coming up so damn soon. I decided to bite the bullet and buy a plane ticket, because as cheap as I am, I decided I just did not want to make that godforsaken road trip that could span 7 or 8 hours depending on Friday traffic when total travel time by plane is less than three hours. Melissa and I ended up the same flight from Houston into Austin, which makes me very happy, not only because I will be thrilled to see her skinny ass, but because that way I can avoid the trauma of arriving alone. Having never been to JournalCon before, I occasionally experience twinges of social anxiety disorder in advance when thinking about the whole event, even though some of my favorite people will be there, and I think that in order to arrive alone, I would need to get drunk on the plane, which I can't see myself doing at 9:00 in the morning, although stranger things have happened. We're arriving at, like, 10:30! So we'll be waiting for the rest of you guys with open arms and maybe even pralines if I can get motivated to make them.

I've been obsessively listening to a Sports Night CD that Elizabeth made for me ages ago. I have "Sloop John B" by the Beach Boys on repeat. I have no idea why. I just really like it. I think it plays when Rebecca invites Dan to the hotel and tells him to bring the tape, which is a moment I really like, so maybe that's why.

Am I the only one disappointed to see Port Charles go off the air? I would always flip to it from Days on my lunch break, and I grew really fond of Caleb, Allison, Rafe, Livvie, Jack, Jamal, Ian, Lucy, and all of their shenanigans. It was so over the top, I mean, vampires and werewolves and angels, but who's to say that the fantastical and supernatural don't have a place in daytime drama? (Of course, this is coming from the girl who unabashedly loved and still fondly remembers the Santa Claus on Santa Barbara tradition.) I know that the actress who plays Livvie is going to General Hospital, Rafe is going to The Bold and the Beautiful (where he is sporting what I guess is supposed to be some kind of tough NY or NJ accent -- I have no idea), and Caleb is going to One Life to Live, but it's just weird to imagine them playing normal people after we've spent such a long time watching Livvie and Caleb bite each other during sex. I HATE, for the sake of the true diehard fans, that there was no resolution of the storylines since the last episode was taped prior to knowledge of cancellation. That would drive me insane if I were someone who had watched this show from the beginning. And it ended just when I was finally able to see Caleb as Caleb and not as Tanner Scofield or the guy with the giant shlonger on Ally McBeal! Curses.
