Another Book and Movie Report

Satellite Down is my latest read by Rob Thomas. So far, his books aren't blowing me away with awesomeness or anything, but they're funny and real. This one made me flash back a little bit to my days in the TV studio at my high school. I spent a lot of time in that little cave with my geeky friends from my TV production class and hosting very stupid call-in shows after school. I'm glad I took that class if for no other reason than it gave me access to the fancy editing equipment on which I made a few compilations of home video footage of my friends and me in high school that we still love to sit down and watch every once in a while. I think I'll keep making my way through Thomas's novels as I gear up for season two of Veronica Mars. (Even though the cover portrait on this one is so ridiculous that I was mortified to even have it in my possession.)

I recently watched Les Choristes. (You can watch the trailer here.) I loved it completely. Cute kids? Check. Down on his luck teacher? Check. Who changes the kids' lives? Through music? While speaking lovely and lyrical French? Check, check, and check. It's charming, sweet, heartbreaking, and full of hope, and it made me cry those tears that you burst into when you're just overcome not necessarily by sadness but just by the beauty of a moment. Sure, the kids go from being a tuneless group to something that sounds like a professional boys' choir and that's absurd, but who the hell cares? This movie is a little fairy tale and tries to be nothing else. I want to give it to everyone I know. Sometimes you just need a little movie like this to curl up and watch and give yourself wholly over to the sweetness in which it's unashamedly awash.

So there are a few song clips posted on the Rent blog. I'm relieved that Rosario Dawson seems to have a decent voice. Again, surreal. I think my little brother and I will probably go to see this on opening night so our experience won't be tainted by backlash or bad reviews, which it may very well get. Who knows?

MUCH to my chagrin, I tried to add Kicking and Screaming to my Netflix queue, and the only film that showed up was the Will Ferrell soccer movie. Does no one else remember the movie from the mid-1990s with Eric Stoltz, Parker Posey, Josh Hamilton, and the sister from The Wonder Years? I loved it. Apparently, it's only available on VHS. This stuns me, really. This is the kind of movie that I think would really have a life on DVD. Don't think I'm not about to order myself a copy. Gena and I used to watch this movie constantly. Are you wearing mascara? No. Yes. Is that a pajama top? No. Yes. Oh, I've been to Prague. Well, I haven't "been to Prague" been to Prague. Cool! A dictionary! I'm gonna look up blowjob.

Gladly, Promises is now available on DVD. This documentary blew me away. It's really powerful and would be fascinating to watch today because of what's going on in the region. It's really just kind of astonishing. It makes me want to be a teacher just for one day just so I could show it to my students and make them understand a little bit of what it would be like to be a teenager on the other side of the world.

8/24:

We're going to see Avenue Q. I can't wait to see it and see her and where she's living! We're going to organize her apartment and hopefully reflect on all of the reasons it does not suck to be us.

8/24:

She talks about the weather a lot, and about saying the rosary and about her knee or her back hurting or how she couldn't sleep the night before. I couldn't read very much of them, but my God, I don't think there's anything I'm more honored to have in my possession.
