We got up this morning for a breakfast of coffee, orange juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, sausage, baked beans, and mushrooms. I avoided the sausage and mushrooms. The owner, Ian, cleared up all of the safari-ism when explaining that he lived in Africa for thirty years. We talked a little about Swansea, and Connie, who I guess is called the cleaner, was all excited because Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas just bought a house there. Then we started the long journey to the Lake District, changing trains at Gloucester and Birmingham. The trip flew by for me because I started and finished Into Thin Air, which was gut-wrenching but a great train read. We arrived in drizzly Keswick (rhymes with Fezzik) and walked up a hill to our B&B, Fell House, which is a gorgeous and elegant Victorian and has unbelievable flowers in the front garden, a spotless and adorable bathroom a few steps away, a sink and a mirror in the flowery pink room with soaps and COTTON BALLS and Q-TIPS and WASHCLOTHS. It has curtains and pink sheets and a lacy canopy and a huge armoire and coffee and tea and a HAIRDRYER and a vegetarian English breakfast option instead of the full English breakfast sausage and bacon fest and I cannot believe we got this room in this "resort town" for £40, which is £10 cheaper than the room over the pub that we loved -- of course, that one had a bathroom -- but this bathroom is immaculate and is only shared by two rooms. It seems too good to be true! Seriously. No -- seriously. We really lucked out with this one! I took a shower with the appropriately pink sample of Lush body wash that we got in Bath and I just feel clean and beauteous!
We booked a hostel on the Royal Mile for Thursday and Friday on Alan's warning that Edinburgh is insane right now because of the festival! I'm a little nervous about the whole dorm aspect but if I survived the Hostel of Horror in Bath, I think I can overcome anything. Once we settled in, we walked through town to Derwentwater Lake which was blue and green and lovely in the evening mist. We got a map for a thirteen kilometer walk around the lake tomorrow and we can't wait.
We ate dinner at Lemon and Lime, a cute place along the way where we each had half a pint and tiny "international" appetizers, veggie spring rolls (China), cheese quesadillas (Mexico), and a green salad (Keswick) along with a veggie wrap. We walked back to our scrumptious accommodations and stopped for a ROLO ICE CREAM POP, otherwise known as SEX ON A STICK or ELIZA'S DREAM COME TRUE. Now we're relaxing in our perfect pink room and watching The Vault. Last night on Coupling, I watched Jane take off her clothes for some apparently new guy named Oliver, Sally got pissed off when finding out that Patrick once slept with Jane, and Susan went into labor. So! Tomorrow, the walk. Also, hopefully it will stop raining! ![]()
