Today we sent off some troops who are leaving for the war. I fought back tears as I applauded them as they were introduced, and they stepped up and stepped back not unlike the von Trapp children when they were introduced to Maria, as I was thinking how solemn they all looked, and how sad, and how each of them is someone's brother or husband or lover or son or uncle or cousin or father or friend. And I wanted to say, "I am sorry you have to go. I am sorry your life is at risk. I am sorry you are leaving your family for a cause that I do not understand. I am sorry that the hearts of the people who love you are broken and that yours is probably broken, too. My heart is broken." And later today there will be another debate over another amendment that has brought the redneck contingent out in droves. Young women are everywhere with their ugly long skirts and stupid braided hair that they aren't allowed to cut or something because I guess short, sassy hair is as sinful as two men or two women wanting to make a legal commitment to one another. I saw a group of teenaged boys in cowboy hats with "God Created Man and Woman" stickers on and had to maneuver between them in a cloud of their foul body odor to get to the elevator, and I heard myself say aloud, "OH MY GOD." Because I didn't know what to say. And I wished I had an airsick bag handy. Because here today we are sending away these men to possibly get blown to bits and to leave behind their homes and their jobs and their families and friends, and for what? FOR WHAT? And also today we are looking to say, sorry, but this cannot happen here, because CLEARLY the world would GRIND TO A SCREECHING HALT and people would want to marry their PET LLAMAS and society as we know it would crumble to smithereens. And I want to say, don't you see that worlds are already crumbling, for FUCK'S SAKE? Just look at the faces of these soldiers in front of you. Look at their worlds. Look at their children and wives crying their eyes out and ask yourself how much your president really gives a shit about family values. He'd just as soon have them killed to defend his made-up war, breaking up their families for months or years on end FOR NO PURPOSE while simultaneously trying to keep gay families from legally coming together. He's a family destroyer all-around, any way you look at it. Geniuses descending here today: why don't you carry your signs and wear your pins against perfectly senseless killing and death and warmongering instead of against a perfectly sensible civil right? Why can't you protest your rat bastard of a president instead of your fellow American citizens who just want to have the same rights that you do? What is wrong with you? What? Is? Wrong? With? You? You really should just be ashamed of yourselves. Shame on all of you. This is George W. Bush's America, and I could really just cry.
